Question

How to ensure LPG tank safety in a heatwave

First, the good news is that your LPG bulk tank is designed to operate safely outdoors all year round, including during periods of hot weather. Your tank is fitted with built-in safety devices, including a Pressure Relief Valve (PRV), which is designed to safely release pressure if temperatures become extremely high.

During very hot weather (typically above 32°C), the pressure inside the tank may increase enough for the PRV to release some pressure.

If this happens, it’s doing exactly what it was designed to do to keep the tank operating safely. We recommend you follow these steps:

  • Call the Flogas Emergency Team immediately on 03457 200 100 for advice.
  • Keep all sources of ignition away from the tank area.
  • From a safe distance, use a hose with a spray attachment to spray water onto the surface of the tank to help cool it.
  • Once the venting has stopped, place wet towels on the tank and continue spraying them with water to help keep the tank cool.
  • Keep well away from the Pressure Relief Valve at all times, as it may vent again without warning.

As an extra precaution during a heatwave, take a minute to check around your tank.

✅ Keep the area around your tank clear and well ventilated.

✅ Keep the separation area around the tank free from combustible materials, such as weeds, long grass, garden waste, rubbish or stored items.

✅ Never light BBQs, fire pits, bonfires or other naked flames near your tank.

✅ Make sure you know where your emergency shut-off valve is located.

⚠️ CALL THE FLOGAS EMERGENCY TEAM FOR HELP IMMEDIATELY IF…

  • You can smell gas around your tank.
  • You hear gas escaping.
  • There is a fire near the tank.

If there is an immediate danger, move everyone to a safe distance, call 999, then contact the Flogas Emergency Team on 03457 200 100.
