Question

How to store and use gas bottles safely in a heatwave

đź’ˇ DID YOU KNOW?

First, the good news is that LPG cylinders are designed for outdoor use, even during hot weather. Your LPG cylinder is designed with built-in safety features to safely cope with changes in temperature and pressure. The biggest risk during a heatwave isn’t the sunshine itself – it’s additional heat from BBQs, fire pits and damaged equipment.

As an extra step, during periods of extreme heat, take 60 seconds to check your cylinder before you use it. Following these simple tips will help keep you, your family and those around you safe.

✅ Your cylinder should be used and stored upright.

✅ Your gas bottle should be stored in a well ventilated and naturally shaded outdoor area. Don’t keep them inside caravans, awnings, tents or unventilated spaces. Avoid tightly covering the cylinder, as good airflow is important.

âś… When in use,  keep it at a safe distance from your our BBQ, fire pits or patio heaters – as stated in the manufacturer’s instructions. Never place it underneath the appliance or near exposed flames.

✅ Are the hose and regulator free from cracks or damage?

If safe, you can spray water onto or place damp towels or cloths to a gas bottle that has been exposed to extreme heat – but take care not to cover or spray the regulator or valve.

đźš© STOP USING YOUR GAS BOTTLE IF…

• You can smell gas.

• You hear a hissing noise.

• The hose or regulator is damaged.

• The cylinder has been exposed to a fire.

⚠️ IF YOUR GAS BOTTLE HAS BEEN EXPOSED TO FIRE

If your cylinder has been close to a fire or another significant heat source:

  • Turn off the gas supply if it is safe to do so.
  • Keep people away from the area.
  • If you’re on a Caravan Park, report it to the caravan park team immediately.
  • If there is a fire or immediate danger, move to a safe distance and call 999 and the Flogas Emergency Team on 03457 200 100.
